I've noticed as I've gotten older is that my scalp gets a tad dryer every year, my grey gets more resistant and coarser and my texture is more frazzled than ever. Fun times, I tell ya :) There seems to be a slight flake almost always but the cold tends to make them grow and multiply in size. I've found only a few things that really help the flakes to disappear and keep my hair as nourished as possible. They work great as long as I stay on top of a routine and when I forget my flakes remind me that I shouldn't wear black in the winter. Not gonna happen. So I better get ON it.

Firstly, Redken's Scalp Relief Shampoo is magic. It's key ingredient is zinc which actually helps the problem rather than creating an addictive vicious cycle that most store bought dandruff products do. Plus, it's a professional product that will be gentle on your color and prevent fading as well as keep your hair from drying out. Depending on the severity of your flakes, sticking to 1 - 2 times a week usually does the trick.

Our second recommendation is a once a week, at-home masque treatment for your hair. I suggest this all year long actually because it's a habit that makes a huge difference, especially for you long-haired ladies. My weekly at the moment is Kerastase Chronologiste as it gives my scalp the deep moisture I need but also builds the strength in my mid-shaft and ends. Apply a nickel to a quarter-size throughout and leave in for five minutes. Massage into your problem areas of your scalp for even deeper penetration.

How It Works: The groundbreaking, in-salon treatment was designed to reverse the damage wrought on your hair and is turning heads at Kérastase salons worldwide. Get similarly mind-blowing results with this at-home treatment packed with a record number of ingredients to smooth and restore lost moisture and shine. Your overworked strands will thank you.

If you find that you need even more moisture, you can take a more natural approach with Aya Natural Hair Care Mask and make your own hot oil treatment. Apply mask oils to hair then heat a wet towel in the microwave for 30-60 seconds. Wrap hair until cools then sleep with the oils in. Three things, make sure you're sleeping on cotton pillows that night so as not to ruin your silks. Second, you can pour the blend into a water bottle and add an equal amount of water (heat it first so it becomes liquid). This may help to distribute product evenly as the thick oils can be difficult to spread sometimes. Lastly, you'll need to wash a minimum of two times the next day to get all of the oils out. This would be a good time to follow up with your five-minute masque to seal the hair.
