Can you really wash your way to younger skin? I remember sitting in my grandmother’s house on Magazine Street in New Orleans, a mere five years old watching an Oil of Olay commercial thinking I would start using it right away and stay flawless forever. I actually thought I knew the secret that so many women did not. Start young. Bravo to the advertisers of that ad that they could convince a pre-kinder to start using their product. My mother backed up this belief by slathering rich fragrant lotions on her own wrinkle-free skin. I watched her beauty routine with a dedicated eye. She was a stunner. Everyone said so. I wanted to be or at least look just like her.
I don’t actually remember putting cream on my face daily until many years later. I’m talking like, twelve. I don’t know what took me so long. Kidding. But seriously, once I started I haven’t stopped. Even in my twenties at the height of my NYC heyday, I’d roll in at 3 AM or later and still always wash my face. Always.
Washing your face just feels better. Your skin is smoother and refreshed. And you never regret having washed it the following day. But according to dermatologists our skin needs natural oils. Especially when we're over thirty. Over washing however, deprives our precious glands of those yummy oils and sends them into survival mode. They compensate by producing more oil (eek) and inflicting our skin with clogged, enlarged pores or zits even.
What’s a girl to do? My approach is to keep my skin on its toes, so bear with me as I share my personal routine. You are welcome to simplify by choosing just one of each product category.
1. Wash every night.
Wash your face before you go to bed and yes, that's even if you're not wearing a smidge of makeup. After thirty, it’s time to move on to cream cleansers, unless you’re acne prone. It’s also unnecessary to wash in the morning (unless you never change your sheets of course). Keeping those natural oils on your skin is a gift and since we get drier with age, we want to avoid washing them away twice a day. So skip the morning face wash but follow all the other steps in the AM.
Which cleanser? I’m having a major moment with BEAUTYCOUNTER. This brand has stolen my heart with their commitment to safe and clean ingredients. They have two awesome cleansers.
Apply a nickel size to your finger tips and massage all the day’s grime away. I use my DermaNew for a about two minutes to get a thorough deep clean. It’s a great exfoliating tool as well as deep cleanser. I find I can bring my monthly facials down to quarterly by using this tool.
For acne or blackhead prone skin, try Beautycounter Enlightening Treatment pads. They leave you feeling super fresh, tighten pores and are antioxidant rich with ingredients like Vitamin C to keep a youthful glow.
2. Add Hydration -
After washing, I always give my face a boost by misting Hyaluronic Acid or Beautycounter’s Rose Water spray $32. Hyaluronic Acid is the best cellular hydrator for your skin. Spray it on then apply your lotion, cream or oil to lock in it’s hydrating benefits. I purchase pure Hyaluronic Acid from Amazon $15 then put it in a spray bottle.
I alternate every other day with the Rose Water spray as I love the fresh scent, immune boosting benefits of rose as well as the hydration it provides. A light mist of either will do you. Give it about ten seconds then go on to your next step. Make sure to apply your next product while skin is still moist.
3. Add An Antioxidant Serum
My go to is another Amazon fave – Vitamin C Serum by Instanatural. I could swear my skin has grown younger this summer and I love the sun. I’ve been applying this religiously morning and night. I usually jump out of bed, brush teeth, apply my Instanatural, stick my hair up and hit the gym or yoga. Then, home, shower and reapply after misting with my hydrator. So, I really use it three times a day. I adore this product and it let’s me skip the eye cream step.
I have a few paths I take here. Remember, I like to change it up but that doesn’t mean you have to. One is to apply Beautycounter’s Lustro Face Oil 1 $64. This delish oil is rich but light and can even be applied for day. Just a few drops will do you. Massage thoroughly into skin and go.
The following eve is straight up Argan Oil. Another Amazon goody. I buy it organic and pure from my trusted Instanatural folks. When I personally go for the Argan, I load my face up but if you are prone to breakouts, start with just a few drops and increase as you’re sure you won’t break out.
Lastly, I go for Beautycounter’s luscious Restorative Night Cream $70. This yummy non-toxic and anti-aging cream leaves your skin feeling buttery smooth and plump. This can actually be used with the Lustro Oil which you would apply first then overlay with the Restorative Night Cream.
5. Use warm to cool water.
We would think washing our face with hot water is like having a steam treatment but the truth is it can be very irritating to skin. Stick to lukewarm or cool water. Post-workout, try to cut down redness and flushing by splashing your face with cold water, which constricts blood vessels.
6. Exfoliate Weekly.
It seems logical - scrub the skin clean, get rid of oil and bacteria, right? Wrong. Avoid harsh scrubs, because they can spur the skin to produce more oil that can clog skin.
Instead, opt for Beautycounter’s Gentle Exfoliator Polishing Cream $30. It uncovers fresh baby faced skin yet soothes with ingredients like coconut oil, green tea, lavender and vitamin E.
